Can Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Treat Depression?
In 2020 there was a study that showed promising results for people with depression. This study followed 104 people that were patients of a certain type of chiropractic care – upper cervical chiropractic. The study lasted 6 weeks and each participant filled out the Goldberg Depression Scale at the beginning and end of the treatment. At the end of the 6 weeks there was a significant improvement based on the patients’ responses on the Goldberg Depression Scale.

Seeing results like that may seem too good to be true unless you have an understanding of how the mind-body connection actually works. Everything that happens in the body and in the mind is a result of nervous system function. includes the brain, but there’s more to it than just the brain.
You have nerves that go from your brain to every single part of your body and those nerves are sending signals in both directions. In fact, most of the traffic in your nervous system is information traveling from your body to your brain – about 90% if it!
Why is it important to know that most of the neurological information in your body are nerve signals going from various parts of your body up to your brain?
Well, it explains how things like exercise (moving your body) can change your mood. It also explains how chiropractic care can improve depression. How well your brain functions and how well your neurotransmitters and hormones stay in balance largely depends on the body-brain connection.
One of the most important sources of those much needed body-brain nerve signals is the upper neck area. If the signals coming from that body of your anatomy are not optimal then it can dramatically alter brain function and therefore your mood. By improving neurological communication between the upper neck area and the brain many of the 104 patients in this study reported an improvement in their depression after just 6 weeks!
