Top Tips for Migraine Relief

Migraines can be stubborn and the symptoms aren’t easy to deal with, but are there any tips or tricks that can help? Yes, but the only way to know if any of them are going to help you is to give them a try – one at a time. The following tips are divided into two groups – migraine relief or migraine prevention. 

For immediate migraine relief….

  • Over the counter medication… Next time you go to your local drug store check out the headache and migraine relief section and you’ll notice you’ve got loads of options. Maybe there’s one there that will work for you. Always follow the recommendations on the package and don’t take different medications at the same time because they might cause unexpected reactions. 
  • Cream of tartar… Admittedly this tip is a bit odd, but some people swear it works. Do your own research before trying something that isn’t intended for pain relief. 
  • Ice or heat pack… Many people find that an ice pack or heating pad can take the edge off of migraine. Try putting the ice pack on the back of your neck, top of head, or forehead. Try the heating pad on your upper back in order to loosen up your back muscles. 
  • Essential oils… The medicinal power of plant oils is real. Not everyone responds the same way, but the oils are generally very safe to use and can be used in combination with other methods. 

 

For migraine prevention…

  • Upper cervical chiropractic care… According to the latest research migraines are caused by an overly sensitive nervous system (specifically the brain stem area). Migraines tend to run in families and research confirms that genes do play a roll which means you’ll always be more likely to get a migraine than someone who doesn’t have those genes, but you can still dramatically reduce how often you get a migraine if you can find a way to improve your brain stem function. More so than any other type of chiropractic care, upper cervical chiropractic care has been shown to be the most effective when it comes to migraine prevention. 
  • Prescription medication… There are plenty of options for prescription medication. Work closely with your medical doctor as you try the different meds and hopefully you’ll find one that works for you. 
  • Botox injections… This is a fairly new medical approach for migraines and doesn’t work for everyone, but it does work well for some people. Generally your medical doctor will refer you to a pain management specialist for these injections. 
  • Change your diet… Many people that suffer from recurring migraines have “triggers” that can start a migraine. Things like processed foods, alcohol, and sulfates are a few of the most common. A diet that cuts out processed foods and gluten is very effective for some migraine sufferers. Check out the “Whole 30” diet as a place to start.
